In Spanish, sentences that ask a question begin and end with a question mark (the same is true of exclamation points). If a question is embedded within a larger sentence, only the interrogative phrase is bracketed by the question marks.

Por ejemplo:

¿Cómo esta, Usted? How are you?
¡Muy bien, gracias! Very well, thank you!

Question words always have an accent.
¿quién?
who?
¿por qué?
why?
¿qué?

¿cómo?

¿cuándo?
when?
¿cuánto?
how much?
¿dónde?

¿cuál?
